There are already rumors, bad information, and misunderstandings spreading online about the Colorado Specified Semiautomatic Firearm Training.

Stop the Rumors First (Colorado Specified Semiautomatic Firearm Training)
Beginning August 1, 2026, Colorado changes the process for purchasing or transferring certain firearms classified as Specified Semiautomatic Firearms (SSF).
This law does NOT affect people who already legally possess affected firearms before August 1, 2026.
This law does NOT automatically apply to every firearm owner in Colorado.
The new process applies to future purchases and transfers involving qualifying firearms.
Possible Purchase Process Overview
Some implementation details are still developing, but the process currently appears similar to this:
STEP 1 — Apply Through Local Sheriff
- Apply for eligibility
- Background investigation
- Administrative review
- Possible fees
- Receive authorization to attend training
STEP 2 — Determine Training Path
Hunter Education Card Holder
4 Hour Firearms Safety Course
No live-fire requirement component in the program.
No Hunter Education Card
12 Hour Firearms Safety Course
No live-fire component in the program.
STEP 3 — Complete Training
- State-approved curriculum
- Certified instructors only
- Written examination required
- Minimum passing score expected: 90%
- Completion submitted to Colorado Parks and Wildlife
STEP 4 — Final Approval Process

Common Questions
Do I need training if I already own one?
Current understanding is that existing owners before August 1, 2026, are not affected.
Do all guns require this course?
No.
Only firearms meeting the SSF definition are included.
Will I have to shoot?
Current guidance indicates no live-fire requirement.
Do Hunter Education cards matter?
Yes.
Hunter Education holders qualify for the shorter 4-hour pathway.
